I hate paying for music. I understand the artists work hard, but I think they are fairly well compensated for what they do. I really resent purchasing an album for just one song. So what’s the solution – How can I get the music I want for free? There were no options really, other than either buying the songs you want or pirating them (getting them from file share sites which is morally questionable).
Music has always been an important part of my life. I’m jamming as I type this. This is something I try and promote to my kids too. We will normally play music in the house when we are cooking or cleaning and I always play music when I’m putting the boys to sleep at night.
For those of you who don’t know me, i’m a bit of a computer geek – I’ve worked in the IT field for over 10 years. What I dig the most is when I can combine my interests in gadgets / technology with my interests in frugality and sustainability. I especially enjoy checking out new websites that appeal to my frugal side and provide great services for FREE.
A website I go to for free tunes is Jango (http://www.jango.com) – “Free music – internet radio that plays what you want!”. This site is very cool – You type in an artist you want to listen to (and they have a massive database of artists) and it will play songs by this artist and similar artists. So lets say I type in The Beatles, it plays their songs and artists like The Monkees, The Kinks, Etc. It’s a great way to discover new songs you’ve never heard of. There has been so many times i’ve heard a song that I didn’t know who the artist was or what the song name was. Jango gives you this info and the song lyrics if you want to sing along
The really neat thing is if you skip songs you don’t like, it develops a taste profile for you and tries not to play this stuff for you again!
Price: Free – You can’t beat that! It doesn’t spam you with ads too which is nice.
You can even take Jango with you on the go if you have an iPhone or Android smartphone.
It’s not uncommon for me bust out the iPhone and jam with the family and show them up with my epic dance moves.
Now see, you can still be a techie geek AND live a frugal and sustainable life
